Joe Tennis, an award-winning reporter for the Bristol Herald Courier, released his fourth book Sullivan County, Tennessee, in September. Published with Arcadia Publishing, it provides a glimpse into the lost state of Franklin, and a lost piece of Southwest Virginia. Chapters will feature the stories behind South Holston Dam, Boone Lake, Kingsport, Bristol Motor Speedway and Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee, the birthplace of country music.

He will be at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 4-7pm.

The meeting was fantastic and Theresa McMahan gave a great talk on her experience of doing a practicum for her Library Science degree at UT.

Elections were held last night. Our newly elected officers are as follows:

President: Theresa McMahan, Sullivan County Public Library

Vice-President: Amy Lippo, Sullivan County Public Library

Secretary: Amy Hopkins, Northeast State Community College

Treasurer: Virginia Salmon, Northeast State Community College

Thank you to all who ran for office.

It was also mentioned last night that the Archives of Appalachia at ETSU have found our records and have put a finding aid up online at http://www.etsu.edu/cass/Archives/Collections/afindaid/a669.html They have the records for Boone Tree from 1965 - 2002.

Fall Meeting 2008

The Boone Tree Fall Meeting will take place on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and will be held at Northeast State’s Basler Library. Please note that this is a changed date, due to schedules/conflicts of some of the Officers.

If you cannot attend the meeting, but are currently a member in good standing (that means that your dues are paid-up), you will be permitted to vote by proxy or by email. All votes returned by email should be sent to me at capeters@NortheastState.edu – I will send a reply to let you know that your votes have been received.

We still need several candidates to fill our slate for the upcoming election. We still need one candidate for VP; two candidates for Secretary; and one candidate for Treasurer. If you would like to become active in Boone Tree, here is your chance! There are only 3-4 meetings per year of our organization, and being active is a great way to get to know other people involved in library work in our region.

Please contact me ASAP if you are interested in running for one of these offices. I will announce our candidates once we complete the slate or by Tuesday, September 9, whichever should happen first.

Thanks in advance and we look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Chrissie Anderson Peters, BTLA President

Our speaker will be Sheila Hunt and her topic will be "Genealogy in the Library." Sheila is a wealth of knowledge and you won't want to miss this event.

Also on the agenda for that evening is officially recognizing our Elise Draper Barrette Award Winner, Clara Hasbrouck.

Additionally, we will make one more attempt to vote the position of "Webmaster" officially into our By-Laws. The other bit of business that we have been trying to vote on, whether or not to increase the number of meetings that the Association offers to members each year, remains in limbo.

Elise Barrette Tree at ETSU

It is difficult to choose one recipient when both people nominated are such incredible winners!

However, your Boone Tree Executive Board met on Monday of this week to make that decision, based on the nominations that we received via email.

I am pleased to announce that the recipient of our inaugural Elise Draper Barrett Award is Clara Hasbrouck.

One nominator said this of Clara: “I think that Clara Hasbrouck has done a great deal for BTLA over the years, especially in researching or gathering up the history of this organization… I believe all the numerous accomplishments and contributions to the library community speak for themselves and this individual is very deserving of this new prestigious award.”

Another nominator added, “Having had the privilege of working with her for many years, I would say that her most compelling attribute is her driving initiative to demand more and better funding and working conditions for libraries and librarians. No one that I can think of is more deserving of this award.”

Many thanks and much appreciation to those who took time to nominate their colleagues for this award. We will officially present the Award at our Spring Meeting – to be held on March 18 – at Sullivan County Public Library in Blountville. Watch for more details, coming soon!

Clara, sincerest congratulations to you!

I have changed the settings on the BTLA listserv to function more like most listservs. Before the change, when someone would reply to a message from the list it would go back to the list and everyone would see it.

I’ve fixed that! Now when you reply to a message sent to the list it goes only to the sender. If you are using Outlook you can use the “Reply to All” button to reply to both the sender and the entire list.

Annual Elise Barrett Award

Here is the nomination form for the annual Elise Barrett award. This award is given each year by Boone Tree to a longstanding member who has made significant, sustained contributions to libraries in northeast Tennessee. It is awarded in the fall with a nice plaque. All nominations will be reviewed by the Boone Tree officers and one will be chosen.
