Boone Tree will provide the meat (and some veggie options), buns, plates, napkins, and plastic ware, as well as water and tea.  Please bring your own drinks (if you want something other than water or tea) and a side dish or dessert to share.

If you are planning on attending, please contact Jason Penwell at jepenwell@northeaststate.edu or Virginia Salmon at vlsalmon@northeaststate.edu and let us know what you will be bringing so that we can make sure that we have a little bit of everything.  We will post the information on the web site so that everyone will have a better idea of what to bring.

We definitely need condiments, desserts, chips, and side dishes such as casseroles, beans, slaw, etc.

Seating is on picnic table benches, so feel free to bring a more comfortable chair if you want.  Also, feel free to bring family-friendly outdoor games.  There will be some library games to play and probably a return of Library Bingo!!

Local author JS Moore will begin the meeting with a presentation about writing and preserving local history through stories. Mr. Moore was born and grew up in Kingsport, and now resides in Greeneville with his family. Please visit his web site at: www.understandingapples.com.

Mr. Moore’s books include several nonfiction collections of stories and two children’s books. He will have all of his books available for purchase and autographs at the meeting. In addition, the books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Books-a-Million, as well as other bookstores.
Mr. Moore has written four books in the Understanding Apples series, which seeks to preserve the histories and traditions of ordinary people in Northeast Tennessee and parts of Southwest Virginia and North Carolina.

The first book is entitled Understanding Apples (2006) and tells stories of a young man named Judd Moore and the Long Island community of Kingsport, at one time best known for violence and bootlegging.

Book two, Gathering Leaves (2008), continues with more stories from the local Appalachian region and includes contributions from other authors, artists, and photographers.

Book three, Rooting Branches (2010), has more personal stories from Mr. Moore’s own family tree and explores the idea of knowing where you came from in order to know where you are going.

Book four, Mending Walls (2012), has more true stories from East Tennessee on a variety of interesting characters.

Mr. Moore’s other nonfiction work is the short Picking Strawberries: The Burkett McInturff Story (2011) about the well-known criminal defense attorney who was still practicing law at 93 years of age.

The two children’s books are Outside Kitty (2011) – the author’s first bestseller – about an inside cat that gets her wish to go outside; and Harmony: On the Farm (2012) – where Harmony the cow takes the reader on a tour of the barnyard.

A short business meeting will follow Mr. Moore’s presentation and light refreshments will be provided.

Chrissie will be signing copies of her book this Saturday, August 4th, at 3:00 p.m. at the Johnson City Barnes and Nobles Bookstore. (The store is located off of State of Franklin near Cheddars and Chili’s, across from the Atlanta Bread Company.)

First, mark your calendar for the Boone Tree picnic.  On Friday, May 11^th, come out to the Eastman Shelter #27 at Bays Mountain for a great time.  Be sure to bring a dish (or two) and join us anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.   BTLA will provide the main course (to be announced on the web site later in the month).  This shelter is close to the playground, so bring your family and kids.  Also, feel free to bring any outdoor games and folding chairs, if you want.  Information and directions are on the web site (www.boonetree.org).

Speaking of the web site, if you haven’t looked lately, you should see the changes that Jason Penwell, our Vice-President/Webmaster has been making.  One of the new functionalities of the site is an event calendar that can be subscribed to with software such as iCal and Outlook or imported into your Google calendar. The site will continue to undergo modifications in order to make it very user-friendly.  Our goal is to have a “one-stop shopping” place for local library news and events.  Stay tuned for more developments!

Jason has also set up a Facebook page for Boone Tree.  Be sure to Like us!  Search for Boone Tree Library Association or visit www.facebook.com/BooneTreeLibraryAssociation.  We hope to use the site to help publicize upcoming events and interesting news in the library world.

Please join me in congratulating the following ETSU individuals, who at the annual Tennessee Library Association (TLA) conference last week, I had the pleasure and honor to present these awards:

Suresh Ponnappa, Director ETSU Quillen College of Medicine Library accepted the Tennessee Library Association Honor Award.   This is the highest recognition Tennessee Library Association bestows on an individual who has made significant contributions to the furtherance of librarianship and library institutions on a statewide or national level.   This award also signifies the outstanding achievements in leadership and significant contributions in this field, which is not limited to health sciences libraries; but encompasses all issues and core values for libraries and workers in Tennessee.

Rebecca Tolley-Stokes, Associate Professor and Faculty Outreach Library at ETSU C.C. Sherrod Library was presented The Frances Neel Cheney Award.   Tennessee Library Association gives this award annually based on an individual who has made a significant contribution to the world of books and librarianship through the encouragement of the love of books and reading.     Rebecca was also recognized for the many years of service to TLA as the editor for the many Tennessee Library Association publications and also in the selection of the Tennessee History Book Award.

Leslie Adebonojo, Undergraduate Student Services Librarian at ETSU C.C. Sherrod Library received The James E. Ward Instruction Award.    This award is given to an individual who participates in the planning, execution of library instruction for an academic, school, public, or a special library.    For the outstanding and sustained work on continuing programs or projects concerned with library instruction as well as through publications; innovative and creative achievement in the development of library instruction programs with a positive image of libraries in the minds of library users.     Recognition of leadership qualities in the library and in professional organizations at the state and national level.
